Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the implementation of a new ₦70,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state, effective December 1, 2024.

The announcement was made on Wednesday via a verified Facebook post by Muhammad Garba, the governor’s Special Adviser on New Media.

Governor Namadi had earlier approved the new wage but faced pressure from the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to specify a commencement date.

The NLC had threatened to embark on a strike if the government failed to announce the implementation timeline.

Recall that the governor had suspended his Special Adviser on Salary and Pension, Bashir Ado, for prematurely announcing the wage adjustment without authorization.

The move aligns Jigawa State with other states adopting higher minimum wages amid inflation and economic challenges.

The upward review is expected to cushion the impact of the raging inflation that has affected civil servants and Nigerians as a whole.
