Chelsea legend Frank Lampard set to return to management with Coventry City
Chelsea football icon Frank Lampard is on the verge of becoming the new manager of Coventry City, marking his return to management after nearly 18 months.
The 46-year-old former Chelsea and England midfielder is reportedly finalizing the details of his contract, with an announcement expected soon.
Lampard has been out of management since leaving Chelsea in an interim role at the end of the 2022-23 season.
He previously managed in the Championship with Derby County, leading them to the 2019 play-off final, where they lost to Aston Villa. His experience at this level is seen as a key factor in Coventry City’s decision to pursue him.
Lampard is set to replace Mark Robins, who was controversially sacked earlier this month despite notable achievements, including guiding the club to the 2022-23 play-off final and last season’s FA Cup semi-finals.
Coventry are currently struggling in the Championship, sitting 17th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.
The club owner, Doug King, has faced backlash from fans over Robins’ dismissal. However, Lampard’s appointment could signal a fresh start for a team looking to turn their season around.
Doug King reportedly has ties to the Redknapp family—Lampard’s uncle, Harry Redknapp, is a well-known figure in football circles. This relationship may have played a role in facilitating the move.
Coventry’s next match, a home game against Cardiff City on Saturday, is likely to be Lampard’s first test in charge.
