Borno: Police recover explosives in Maiduguri, enhance public safety measures
The Borno State police recovered eight unexploded devices on Friday from Maiduguri’s Dala and Gwange areas, following distress calls about suspicious objects.
According to a statement by state police spokesperson ASP Grace Michael, the discovery was made near an uncompleted building in the Dala-Abuja Talakawa area.
The spokesperson said, “Our Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13 team responded swiftly, recovering six projectiles and one unexploded mortar bomb, which were safely relocated to a secure site.”
Later, a second report from Gwange revealed a suspicious object along the riverbank, identified as an unexploded hand grenade. Preliminary investigations suggested that recent floods displaced the ordnance, washing them ashore.
In response, the police conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Awareness (EORE) training for residents in both communities, emphasizing safety protocols. The state Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, reaffirmed the police command’s unwavering commitment to public safety, urging vigilance among citizens.
Residents have been encouraged to remain calm and to report any suspicious items or activities using the emergency lines: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
