Ghana: Presidential candidates to sign peace pact ahead of December 7 elections
The signing of the Peace Pact by presidential candidates contesting Ghana’s December 7 general election is scheduled for Thursday, November 28, in Accra.
This announcement was made by Mr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, during a meeting with Mr. Mohammed Lawan Gana, the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, and members of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission.
The Peace Pact aims to foster peaceful conduct among political parties during the election period. Mr. Amoh highlighted ongoing efforts to address concerns raised by stakeholders, particularly the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama.
He confirmed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, had expressed his readiness to sign the agreement.
At the meeting, Mr. Gana announced electoral funding support provided by ECOWAS to key institutions promoting peaceful elections.
The funds include $50,000 for the National Peace Council, $100,000 for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), and $30,000 each for the Coalition for Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) and the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA).
Mr. Gana also called on Ghanaians to ensure a peaceful, free, fair, and credible election process.
