Video: Governor Zulum denounces rising cases of polygamy among IDPs in Borno, urges action from politicians, religious leaders
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns over the rising trend of polygamy among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state, highlighting the strain it places on limited resources.
In a widely circulated video shared on TikTok by Kawu Garba, Zulum criticized political leaders for their reluctance to address this issue due to fears of losing votes in elections.
The governor questioned the silence of religious leaders and politicians, asking, “Which Islamic teacher has spoken out against this? Which member has kicked against this situation?” He pointed to the example of a man who entered an IDP camp with one wife in 2011 or 2012 but has since married three more.
Zulum’s comments have sparked significant reactions online.
@bigdammy_ commented “The antidote to this is EDUCATION. successive state governments and the religious/traditional stakeholders have no strategy to get the populace educated. When will quality education be a priority of opinion shapers & taught leaders in the north? Untill then, don’t expect change.”
@planetaby also said: “There are major and pressing issues to address, but instead of the Northern leaders taking up their challenges and educating their people. Tax reform is their problem. How can somebody in the IDP camp add 3 more wives? Why? How?”
@UkashatuA1 backed the need for women to have a husband, saying “Every woman getting a husband is the best thing, we must put hands together to encourage it.”
Governor Zulum’s remarks have reignited discussions about addressing deeply rooted social issues in IDP camps and the broader community, urging political and religious leaders to take bold steps for reform.
