Nigeria concluded their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a surprising 2-1 loss to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Despite having already secured qualification as Group D winners, the Super Eagles were expected to dominate the encounter.

They took the lead in the 59th minute through an impressive solo effort from Samuel Chukwueze, raising hopes of a routine victory.

However, the determined Rwandans turned the tide with two quick goals. Ange Mutsinzi equalized, and Innocent Nshuti sealed the historic win for Rwanda, marking their first-ever triumph over the three-time African champions.

The defeat is Nigeria’s first under interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, who may step down from the role ahead of the tournament.

While the loss has no bearing on Nigeria’s qualification, it raises questions about the team’s preparedness and consistency ahead of AFCON 2025.

For Rwanda, the victory is a significant milestone, highlighting their growth in African football. As the tournament approaches, both teams will look to address their shortcomings and build momentum for the continental showdown.
