Plateau: At least 13 dead in mining site collapse in Bassa LGA
At least 13 people have been confirmed dead following a mining site collapse in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, with the victims primarily young individuals aged between 18 and 30, seeking a livelihood in the area.
Council Chairman Joshua Riti confirmed the death toll on Monday in Jos, expressing deep sorrow over the incident. The mining site, located at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs, was the site of the collapse.
Riti revealed that seven of the victims were from Bassa LGA. He described the tragedy as deeply unfortunate, highlighting that the young people involved were simply trying to earn a living amid the country’s economic challenges.
“These young people were out to put their energies to good use, but sadly, they met with untimely death,” Riti stated. He extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of those affected by the disaster.
