Enugu government initiates legal action over physical abuse of FGC student (Video)
The Enugu State government has pledged to bring to justice those responsible for the bullying and physical abuse of a student at Federal Government College, Enugu.
A video showing a student in uniform being subjected to dehumanizing treatment by peers went viral over the weekend, sparking widespread condemnation across Nigeria.
The disturbing footage captures what appears to be a junior student lying on the ground as senior students repeatedly flog him with a waist belt.
In response to the incident, Enugu State’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, issued a statement through the Ministry of Education, vowing to secure justice for the victim and to hold those involved accountable.
The commission said the ministry has began “investigation and legal actions regarding the deeply disturbing incident of bullying and physical abuse that recently occurred at the Federal Government College, Enugu.
“This ugly event has sparked righteous anger and widespread condemnation from Ndi Enugu and generated emotional distress across Enugu State especially because of the historic investment of the state government in education reform and in provision of safe and inclusive schools”.
He repledged the Enugu State government “zero tolerance for bullying and abuse in our schools”, stressing that the safety and welfare of “our children is paramount”.
“The Enugu State government is resolved to prosecute culprits who engaged the criminal behavior of physical assault against children”, the statement added.
