A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the case against individuals charged in connection with the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu struck out the suit after counsel for the Attorney General of the Federation, M.D. Abubakar, applied to assume control of the case and discontinue it.

Representing Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPF) Mohammed Abubakar invoked the powers granted under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution to take over the case from the Inspector General of Police.

Upon accepting this request, Justice Egwuatu allowed the Attorney General to also request the dismissal of the case for all 119 defendants. With no objections from defense lawyers, the judge granted the request, effectively dropping the charges.

Although the defendants were not present in court, Justice Egwuatu ordered their immediate release from detention.

This decision followed President Bola Tinubu’s directive on Monday for the Attorney General to end the prosecution, as many of the accused are minors and, by law, should not face such a trial.
