Oyo State-born medical doctor, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, has been freed from captivity after she was kidnapped by the men of the underworld in December 2023.

Dr. Popoola, a mother of five, was abducted from her workplace at the National Eye Center hospital in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, along with her husband, a military officer, and nephew, Mugni Folaranmi.

After months in captivity, Dr. Popoola and her nephew were released on Wednesday evening.

Her husband had been freed earlier in March, following the payment of a substantial ransom, including millions of naira and motorcycles.

A source from Dr. Popoola’s hometown of Iseyin confirmed the release, saying, “Alhamdulillah, they have been released less than an hour ago.”

The abducted medical practitioner  worked at the National Eye Center hospital for six years, which is located on the outskirts of Kaduna city, making it a vulnerable target for kidnappers.

The kidnappers initially demanded a N40 million ransom and took the victims from the hospital’s staff quarters.

Dr. Popoola’s ordeal has highlighted concerns about the safety of medical professionals and facilities in Nigeria.
