A mass memorial service is scheduled to take place this Sunday, October 6, 2024, to honor the 18 victims of the devastating shooting incidents in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

On Friday night, gunmen opened fire at two different locations, claiming the lives of 15 women and three men, with the youngest victim being just 14 years old.

The motive behind the shootings remains unknown, and although no arrests have been made, one person is currently being questioned. The national police minister confirmed this during a visit to the Eastern Cape.

Following a meeting between the Provincial Government and the families of the victims, it was decided that a mass memorial service would be held this Sunday, followed by private funerals on separate dates next weekend, October 12 and 13.

This will allow the families to pay their respects in a more intimate setting, in line with their traditional beliefs.

The government, along with various businesses, will provide material support to the families for the funeral, including coffins, logistics, and groceries.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, Members of the Executive Council, Mayors, traditional leaders, Faith-Based Organizations, and national leaders will attend the memorial service to show solidarity with the families and the community.

The provincial government has committed to providing ongoing psycho-social support to the bereaved families during this difficult time. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

This tragic event has sent shockwaves across the country, and the outpouring of love and support from various corners of South Africa is a testament to the nation’s solidarity with the affected families.
