Edo State election: Omokri calls for peace, acceptance

0

Reno Omokri has weighed in on the #EdoDecide2024 election, emphasising the importance of accepting defeat and promoting peace. Acknowledging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) credibility, despite its imperfections, he urged politicians to graciously concede when they lose.

Omokri reflected on Nigeria’s progress in democracy, noting the significant reduction in violence and electoral malpractices. He also praised the security forces and National Security Adviser for ensuring relative peace during the election. The focus now shifts to supporting INEC and respecting the people’s choice.

He wrote on Facebook: “On the #EdoDecide2024, my position is that for Nigeria to move forward, politicians must learn to accept defeat when they have lost elections. INEC is not perfect. However, they are credible.

“That you are not a winner should not automatically make you a sinner. It is only four years. If you are not the choice today, you get another chance tomorrow. Don’t go crazy because of democracy.

“Nigeria has come a long way, and our democracy is here to stay. People used to be killed during elections. Nobody was killed in Edo State, to the best of my knowledge. Candidates and aspirants were previously assassinated. Now, they only assassinate each other’s characters. The security forces have severely reduced vote buying and underaged voting, and we must thank the National Security Adviser for the relative peace that prevailed during this election.

“I call on all Nigerians to support the Independent National Electoral Commission and accept the people’s choice. Let us be the voice for peace. Anybody who is disappointed with the result should seek redress in court. But that is not even necessary.

“Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Edo indigene or resident. Resist any call to violence and do not allow yourself to be used for turbulence.

“May God bless Nigeria.”
