Delta police crackdown on kidnappers, arrest five in sting operation
The Delta State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping, arresting five suspects in the Ughelli South Local Government Area.
According to Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesman, the suspects were apprehended on Thursday at their hideout in Ewu town, Ughelli South, thanks to a tip-off.
The police crack squad attached to the Ughelli Area Command carried out the operation, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new security measures implemented by Commissioner of Police Abaniwona Olufemi.
Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to kidnapping and releasing a 70-year-old woman after receiving a ransom of N7.9 million.
This achievement highlights the efforts of the Delta Police to combat kidnapping and ensure public safety. With continued collaboration between law enforcement and the community, the state can look forward to a reduction in kidnapping incidents.
“On September 12, 2024, the crack squad attached to the Ughelli Area Command, acting on a tip-off, stormed a brothel cum criminal hideout in Ewu town and arrested five suspects.
“The suspects confessed to various armed robbery and kidnapping operations in Ughelli and environs, including the kidnap of a 70-year-old woman, whom they abducted on September 8, and collected a sum of N7.9 million before her release,” said Mr Edafe.
According to the spokesman, items recovered from the suspects include one single barrel, three locally made cut-to-size guns, and N450,000.
Other items are one Moniepoint Point of Sales machine, one OPay POS machine, and wraps of weeds suspected to be Cannabis sativa. Mr Edafe said the suspects were in their custody pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
