Death toll in Gaza surpasses 40,200 as Israeli strikes kill 50 Palestinians
No fewer than 50 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, raising the overall death toll since last Oct. 7 to 40,223, the Health Ministry in the war-torn enclave said on Wednesday.
A ministry statement added that some 92,981 others have been injured in the ongoing assault.
“Israeli forces killed 50 people and injured 124 others in four ‘massacres’ of families in the last 24 hours,” the ministry said.
“Many people are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them,” it added.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has continued its relentless assault on the Gaza Strip, defying a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, which was prompted by a Hamas attack.
The prolonged conflict has left Gaza in ruins, with vast areas destroyed and a suffocating blockade severely restricting access to vital necessities like food, clean water, and medicine.
Israel is now facing accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered a halt to Israel’s military operations in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza where over a million Palestinians had sought safety before the area was invaded on May 6.
