Exclusive: Ikorodu traditional, religious leaders reject August 1 nationwide protest, appeal for peace (Video)
The Chief Imam of Ikorodu, Lagos, Sheikh Seifudeen Olowooribi, has announced that religious and traditional leaders in Ikorodu have united to reject the proposed nationwide protest scheduled for August 1.
In a video message shared on social media, the respected Imam urged protesters to abandon the rally, emphasising the importance of peace in Ikorodu.
Sheikh Olowooribi revealed that a broad coalition of leaders, including traditional chiefs, CDCs, imams, pastors, and market women, have collectively rejected the planned protest.
He highlighted the devastating impact of the last #EndSars protest on Ikorodu and the country, citing the significant economic losses and destruction.
The #EndSARS protests, which began in October 2020, resulted in estimated economic losses of 200 billion NGN (486.4 million USD).
According to Atlas Reinsurer Reports Africa, Nigerian insurers paid 9 billion NGN (21.89 million USD) for damages caused by the protests. The Nigerian Insurance Association (NIA) estimates that the cost of insured losses could reach 20 billion NGN (48.64 million USD), stemming from cases of vandalism, looting, theft, business interruption, burglary, and fire.
