Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji and Mr Mutiu Olawuyi have launched a news outlet, The Satellite, in Nigeria.

The news outlet which is dedicated to covering Nigerian and global events was launched virtually on Saturday July 27, 2024.

Anchored by a Lagos-based freelance journalist, Akeem Alao, the event highlighted the mission to deliver comprehensive and impactful journalism on significant local and international issues.

A panel of intellectuals directed discussion during this session: Dr. Dusting Pickering, Mr Mutiu Olawuyi, and Chryssa Velissariou among others who provided valuable insights into topics about future digital journalism and changing media landscapes.

Adedimeji noted that this is a metaphorical statement, ”the future of digital journalism” because there have already been radical changes taking place in this sector.

“Without doubt, it remains a fact that tomorrow will be digital with new technologies and ways of consuming news continuously affecting journalism,” Adedimeji said.

Adedimeji’s address concerned key aspects shaping the course for digital journalism – growth in online news consumption and integration of social media platforms amongst others trends he discussed during his speech were aimed at identifying those factors which led to such widespread popularity among people using internet as their major source communication tool today.

He also discussed the key patterns of establishing digital journalism such as increase in consuming news from the internet and absorbing social media.

According to him, news is not constrained within traditional media any more because platforms like LinkedIn gain prominence within the context of news ecosystem.

Adedimeji emphasized opportunities in digital journalism. He explained that they make information easier to access, introduce new storytelling platforms and enhance fact-checking and verification processes. They are fundamental, as he put it, to maintaining the credibility and integrity of news reporting.

He, however, recognised shortcomings that affect digital journalism despite numerous opportunities that it presents.

Misinformation, digital divide and the sustainability of news organisations in a rapidly changing environment were mentioned as challenges thus illustrating continuous innovation and adaptation.

Summing up, Adedimeji thanked all panelists for their invaluable inputs during this event at which substantial measures were taken aimed at fostering The Satellite continuity towards delivering dependable high-quality news stories in our times today.
