“Major role of journalism is to contribute to global peace — Chryssa Valissariou
Chryssa Valissariou, a Greek peace advocate, poet and professor of physics, has emphasised the crucial role of journalism in promoting peace worldwide.
Valissariou said this at virtual launch of a Nigerian newspaper, The Satellite, which was founded by renowned poet and publisher Mutiu Olawuyi and Prof Mahfouz Adedimeji from the Department of English, University of Ilorin.
The event, which took place on Saturday July 27, 2024, was hosted by Olawuyi and co-hosted by Adedimeji.
The event was skillfully anchored by a Nigerian freelancer Akeem Alao.
During her address, Valissariou highlighted the multifaceted nature of journalism and its profound impact on society.
She revealed her long-standing commitment to advocating for peace, which began during her youthful days as a poet in the public eye.
Valissariou disclosed that she has collaborated extensively with Olawuyi a prominent figure in the literary world, on numerous books centered around the theme of peace.
Furthermore, she has worked closely with Mrs. Aria Soldier in Canada and the national Big Potter Foundation, dedicating her efforts to peace journalism.
Valissariou emphasised the significance of global journalism, particularly in the digital age, as a powerful tool for fostering peace.
However, she acknowledged the challenges that journalism can pose to peacebuilding efforts.
She cautioned against the potential harm that media can cause, urging journalists to exercise caution and responsibility in their writing.
Valissariou emphasised the ethical dimensions of journalism, emphasising that “journalists should prioritise the welfare of humanity over personal ambition.”
She called for a collective effort to ensure that journalism promotes peace, love, and harmony, rather than contributing to conflict, hatred, and biases.
Valissariou’s remarks shed light on the vital role of journalism in shaping a peaceful world. Her words serve as a reminder that journalists hold immense power and influence and should utilise their platform to create positive change.
