Ethiopia’s PM welcomes ratification of the Nile River Basin agreement by South Sudan
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced a diplomatic milestone, celebrating the ratification of the Nile River Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA) by South Sudan.
The historic development marks a crucial step towards enhanced regional cooperation in the Nile Basin, fostering collective efforts for the mutual benefit of the people in the region through the establishment of the Nile Basin Commission.
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has been a contentious issue among the Nile Basin countries, particularly Egypt and Sudan.
As Ethiopia began constructing the dam, Egypt raised concerns about its potential impact on electricity supply, while Sudan warned of adverse effects on its farming sector.
Numerous tripartite meetings have been held to resolve these issues, but they have ended in an impasse.
Some reports suggest that Prime Minister Abiy is leveraging the ongoing crisis in Sudan to advance Ethiopia’s position on the GERD.
Despite these challenges, the ratification of the CFA by South Sudan is seen as a positive step towards regional collaboration and sustainable development in the Nile Basin.
