Somalia’s military chief calls for greater action to counter Al-Shabaab threat
Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhyadin, Commander of the Somalia National Army, convened a meeting with all army leaders in Mogadishu aimed to reinforce the directives issued by the president Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, emphasizing the acceleration of efforts against the Al-Shabaab group.
Addressing the assembled military leadership, Commander Ibrahim stressed the imperative for each leader to intensify their contributions and to ensure readiness for their national duties.
He highlighted the strategic expansion of the army’s capabilities through the establishment of new commands and bases, which are pivotal to the ongoing anti-Al-Shabaab campaign.
He stated that this will play a critical role in enhancing the army’s capacity, providing support, and improving the overall quality of our forces and signaling a renewed and intensified effort to secure peace and stability in the region.
The Somalia government recently reported that approximately one hundred al-Shabaab members have surrendered across the South-Central states of Galmudug, Southwest, HirShabelle, and Jubaland.
The government’s efforts to combat al-Shabaab have been bolstered by the support of the international community in recent times.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), and other international partners have assisted in the fight against terrorism, helping to create the conditions necessary for peace and stability to take root.
