In a rare primetime interview with ABC News on Friday, President Joe Biden sought to alleviate concerns about his re-election bid, stating that only divine intervention could persuade him to drop out of the race.

When asked about taking a cognitive test to prove his fitness for office, Biden declined, saying he faces mental challenges daily and his daily tasks serve as a constant assessment.

The 81-year-old president reaffirmed his commitment to running, dismissing suggestions from some Democratic officials and donuors that he should step aside in favour of a younger candidate, following a tumultuous debate with Donald Trump last week.

In the media chat, Mr Stephanopoulos pressed the president on his capacity to serve another term, asking Mr Biden if he was in denial about his health and ability to win.

Biden reacted saying, “I don’t think anybody’s more qualified to be president or win this race than me,” Mr Biden said, blaming his poor performance last week on exhaustion and a “bad cold”.

Commenting the call for him to drop out of the race due to his poor outing in the debate with Donald Trump, the US president said: “I see all these stories that say I’m too old,” Mr Biden said at the rally, before triumphing his record in the White House. “Was I too old to create 15 million jobs?” he said. “Was I too old to erase student debt for five million Americans?”

“Do you think I’m too old to beat Donald Trump?” he asked, as the crowd responded “no”.

Reports surfaced on Friday that Senator Mark Warner was secretly gathering a group of Democratic senators to urge President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, citing concerns sparked by the recent CNN debate.

However, when questioned by reporters, Biden downplayed the reports, stating that Warner was the only one harbouring such concerns and that no other senator had joined him in calling for Biden to drop out of the race.
