Gwoza blasts: Death toll hits 30 as IGP Egbetokun denounces bomb attacks
Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has announced that the death toll from a series of suicide bombings in Gwoza, Borno State, has risen to over 30.
The attacks, believed to have been carried out by female bombers, targeted a wedding, a funeral, and a hospital, leaving 42 people injured.
Shettima visited the hospital in Maiduguri, the state capital, on Monday to assess the situation.
President Bola Tinubu earlier condemned the attacks, calling them “desperate acts of terror”.
The coordinated attacks on Saturday have left the community in shock and grief, with many still reeling from the horror of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has denounced the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza, Borno State, that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and injuries to many.
He offers his deepest condolences to the Borno State government, families, and loved ones of the victims.
To enhance security and prevent further attacks, the IGP has deployed additional personnel and resources to the state.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army EOD Unit, is conducting clearance operations to ensure the safety of Borno State and its neighbouring states.
Also, the IGP has directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Department to intensify intelligence gathering nationwide to support more effective crime prevention and investigation efforts.
