Investigation commences as German aviation experts land in Malawi to probe plane crash that killed former Vice President, others
A team of German aviation experts has arrived in Malawi to investigate the fatal crash of a military plane that claimed the life of Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others.
Recall that the Vice President Chilima was killed along with eight others on June 10 in an air crash that shook the entire country.
Information Minister Moses Kunkuyu confirmed that the arrival of the experts is in response to a call made last week by President Lazarus Chakwera to the international community for an independent investigation to unravel the cause of the accident.
He stressed that the president has assured the team there will be no hindrance to their work with full access to the site, people, institutions among other needed resources to get the job done.
Following the crash, various groups and individuals from across Malawian society have been demanding an independent investigation that would provide a thorough and transparent accounting of the incident, and thereby satisfy the public’s desire for answers and truth.
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC), an influential quasi-religious organization in Malawi, has warned the government not to interfere with the investigation, emphasizing that any such intervention would undermine the probe’s credibility and thwart the pursuit of truth.
According to PAC spokesperson Rev. Gilford Matonga, the investigation’s outcome will be a crucial moment of truth for the nation, with far-reaching consequences.
