AU urges direct talks between Sudanese generals, schedules ceasefire negotiations for July
The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has urged direct negotiations between the warring generals of Sudan to secure a ceasefire agreement.
According to an AU statement, an all-inclusive political dialogue centered on the conflict in Sudan is scheduled to begin on July 10, 2024, in Addis Ababa.
The statement detailed that the AU Commission (AUC) Chairperson, through the AU High-Level Panel on Sudan and in collaboration with IGAD, is striving to achieve a people-driven solution to the brutal conflict and restore constitutional democratic order in Sudan.
This decision followed a meeting of heads of state and government on Friday concerning the Sudanese situation. The communiqué also revealed another dialogue effort will take place in Egypt in early July, ahead of the Addis Ababa talks.
The AU expressed appreciation for the efforts of neighboring countries, in coordination with the AU and IGAD, to promote peace in Sudan. This includes the early July planned dialogue among Sudanese actors facilitated by Egypt to complementingO the AU/IGAD-led Inclusive Dialogue.
Additionally, the communiqué highlighted that a committee led by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is working with the AU Commission and the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA) to identify all external actors providing military and financial support to the warring factions, exacerbating the conflict.
The Council called on all stakeholders to work inclusively, in a coordinated and synchronized manner, through the existing AU-established coordinating mechanisms to resolve the crisis in Sudan.
