Rescue efforts intensify as aircraft carrying Malawi vice president disappears
The Malawian government has assured that search and rescue efforts will continue until the missing aircraft carrying Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima is found.
President Lazarus Chakwera disclosed late Monday while reacting to the disappearance of the aircraft carrying his deputy.
The 51-year-old Vice President was on a military aircraft with nine others that departed Lilongwe, the capital, at 9:17 a.m. (0717 GMT), according to a statement from Malawi’s Office of the President and Cabinet.
It added that efforts by aviation officials to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar had failed.
President Lazarus Chakwera said in a televised address to the nation that he’s holding on to every fibre of hope that survivors will be found.
He added that he has given orders that the operation should continue until the plane is located.
To facilitate a quick rescue operation, Malawi had asked neighbouring countries, as well as the governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Israel, for assistance.
