Kano Emirates Tussle: Governor Kabir Yusuf orders arrest of deposed Aminu Ado Bayero
The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has ordered the arrest of Aminu Ado Bayero, the dethroned Emir of Kano.
The governor justified the call for the arrest as he alleged that the ex-emir was “creating tension in the state”.
The governor’s directive to arrest Bayero was announced in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
“The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the immediate arrest of the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for creating tension in the state.
“The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the Governor.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys,” the statement reads.
Reports say Bayero, who was kicked out of the throne on Thursday following the repeal of a 2019 emirate law by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled house, arrived at the Aminu Kano International Airport around 4:30am, where he was greeted by scores of supporters.
Bayero’s convoy went straight to the palace, which suggested his plan to reclaim his position.
Recall that a Federal High Court in Kano on Thursday issued an ex-parte order preventing Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The court also stopped the implementation of a new law that abolished the four emirates of Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.
Justice Liman ordered all involved parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of a suit filed by the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Aminu Babba-Dan Agundi which challenges the reinstatement of the former CBN governor by the Kano State government.
The court’s ruling came less than 24 hours after Governor Yusuf announced of Kano State announced Emir Sanusi’s re-appointment shortly after signing the Kano Emirate Council (Amended) bill into law.
