Video: Controversy erupts as Catholic leaders defy tradition at Emir of Ilorin’s palace
The social media landscape in Kwara State erupted with controversy as some Catholic Church leaders in the state , alongside some pastors and their followers, paid a visit to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-gambari.
Instead of adhering to tradition by kneeling before the royal figure, a video circulating online revealed the Catholic Christian leaders and their entourage standing upright during the exchange of pleasantries with their host.
This breach of traditional etiquette sparked a flurry of reactions online, with netizens divided into opposing camps.
Some condemned the visitors’ actions as a blatant disregard for customary rites, insisting that kneeling before the Emir is essential to demonstrate traditional respect.
Abu Ahmad El-Ilory expressed outrage, stating, “This is ridiculous! If I were at the palace, I would insist they kneel or leave. They must show proper respect to the Emir.”
Conversely, certain Muslim commentators, particularly those of the Sunni sect, argued that kneeling to greet contradicts Islamic principles.
Samsudeen Olawale Omolade applauded the visitors’ courage, noting, “I see beyond just avoidance of knee but courage, these set of people hardly bow talk less of prostration but rather take the knees of kings especially in Yorubaland and Political leaders.”
On his part , Facebook user Abu-Abdillah Gbolahan Al-Iloriy questioned why Sunni scholars are pressured to kneel, while the Catholic leaders were not subjected to the same expectation. He urged scholars to reassess their adherence to principles and emphasized the need for consistency in religious practices.
The video of the encounter has triggered widespread debate and reflection on cultural norms and religious dictates.
