Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will visit Africa’s most populous nation Nigeria, in May, following an invitation by the country’s chief of defence staff.

A statement by the defence spokesperson, Tukur Gusau, said “The visit is to consolidate Nigeria’s stronghold at the [Invictus] game and the possibility of hosting the event [in] later years.”

The actual date of Harry and Meghan’s visit has yet to be confirmed, but they plan to participate in a variety of activities during their trip, including meeting military personnel and experiencing local cultural events.

Prince Harry launched the Invictus Games, a sports event for military personnel wounded in action, in 2014.

In 2023, Nigeria featured at the games, winning gold and bronze medals and becoming the first African country to participate in the event.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have unwavering ties with the West African country.

In 2022, the Duchess of Sussex said that genealogy tests proved that she is 43% Nigerian.

The potential journey to Nigeria will be one of the few overseas tours the couple has done since leaving the Royal family.

In January 2024, they busted Jamaica for the premiere of the Bob Marley movie One Love, and they undertook what was described as a quasi-royal tour to New York in September 2021.
