Blazing inferno destroys goods, shops in Nigeria’s commercial hub of Lagos
No fewer than 14 buildings were affected by a fire outbreak that occurred on Tuesday in Dosumu Market in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Nigeria’s economic hub.
Eyewitness accounts confirmed that the fire started around 9 a.m. Nigerian time when a power generator used by a printing press gutted the fire while it was getting refueled.
The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority, Ibrahim Farinloye, who confirmed the incident, said four buildings out of the 14 affected had collapsed.
Several goods worth millions of naira were also destroyed in the fire.
Shop owners collapsed and rushed to the hospital following the disturbing incident that has wreaked financial havoc on their businesses.
Different markets in Lagos have experienced varying degrees of fire outbreaks in 2024 alone.
In January, reports say no fewer than 6,700 traders were affected by a fire that gutted the popular Mandilas building on Broad Street, Lagos Island Local Government Area of the state.
Experts have called for proper planning of major markets in Lagos and appealed to the state government to provide more fire outbreak prevention mechanisms in order to save lives and properties.
