Algeria denounces moves by Morocco to seize properties in Rabat

Algeria has condemned in the strongest terms recent Morocco’s decree to confiscate properties belonging to the Algerian Embassy in Rabat, describing the move as “a new phase of escalation” from its North African neighbour.

In a statement released by the Algerian Foreign Ministry on Sunday, the move was described as a “flagrant violation” of international norms and a departure from civilized diplomatic practices.

Algeria characterized the action as illegitimate and incompatible with the responsibilities expected of any member state within the global community.

The Algerian government has therefore vowed to employ all legal means available to protect its interests, including seeking recourse through the United Nations.

The Moroccan government had last week issued a decree to expropriate buildings owned by the Algerian Embassy in Rabat as part of an expansion project for the Moroccan Foreign Ministry’s administrative facilities.

According to the decree, the expansion initiative falls under a law granting the government authority to appropriate infrastructure for public sector development.

The properties identified for seizure are Kabbalia, which spans an area of 619 square meters, Zanzi, covering a total area of 630 square meters, and “Villa de Soleil Levant”, which occupies 491 square meters.

The decision to seize these properties was reportedly made following consultations between the Ministries of Economy and Finance and the Interior Ministry.
