US intelligence warns Sudan conflict could spill over borders
US intelligence has issued a warning regarding the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), cautioning that it could have far-reaching consequences beyond Sudan’s borders.
This warning stems from the 2024 Annual Threat Assessment report by US Intelligence, which highlighted the potential of Sudan to become a haven for terrorists and criminals, and the potential for the conflict to spread beyond its borders
It warns of the fighting in Sudan spreading beyond its borders, with outsiders joining the conflict and civilians facing the threat of starvation, death and displacement.
The warring factions in Sudan continue to engage in military confrontations, with both sides accusing each other of terrorism.
This tension has been fueled by a disturbing viral video that surfaced on Sudanese social media in mid-February, showing individuals in military uniform brandishing severed human heads allegedly belonging to Sudanese civilians.
Despite calls from the families of the alleged victims to the Sudanese military to investigate the video’s authenticity, no official report has been released to date.
War erupted in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The U.N. has said nearly 25 million people – half Sudan’s population – need aid and some 8 million have fled their homes. The U.S. government has accused the warring parties of commiting war crimes.
