The Kebbi State Governor has come under fire after he distributed 24 operational vehicles to members of the state House of Assembly.

Governor Nasir Idris on Tuesday distributed the vehicles to the lawmakers in Birnin Kebbi as he reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for government officials to operate.

“We are making history again today, because we are handing over 24 vehicles to members of the state House of Assembly to ease transportation challenges in their official engagements.

“This will also enable them to be visiting their people to find out their predicaments and challenges. The gesture is in fulfilment of our campaign promise, in addition, we  have distributed 30 operational vehicles to security agencies operating in the state and 28 to members of the State Executive Council, among others,” the governor said.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted the governor advising the lawmakers to exhibit the fear God Almighty, adding, “Let me also enjoin you to be just and fair to people of the state in your legislative businesses.

”We have more than five million people in this state, and God has given us the mantle of leadership to govern our people, not because we are better than them but for Him to try our capability and ability to see how we can treat the people.”

While reacting to the distribution of the luxurious cars on X, some netizens faulted the gesture of the governor to the lawmakers adding that the gifts are coming at the wrong time.

@jollynony said, Public money for “first class” luxury while the people God has allowed to be under you are dying of hunger. In this hardship?! How many tractors would this buy? How many schools? How many hospitals? How many drugs? How much food? Why do you people do this?! Why?”

On her part, Rinu Tinuola also criticised the governor while highlighting the challenges facing the state as one the low-rated in Nigeria with the worst health quality and huge rates of out-of-school children.

@SavvyRinu said, “Please find attached – One of poorest states in Nigeria. – Worst life expectancy. – Worst overall quality of health. – Huge rates of out of school children and child brides. – Over 90% children under 5 multidimensionally poor.”

Yinka Oladejo was not too critical of the move. Instead, he called for the patronage of locally assembled vehicles in Nigeria as part of efforts to drive business and economy of the state and the nation at large.

Another user corroborated this position. @obajemujnr “You can’t patronize Innoson or Nord, but you still think Binance is the problem. On the other hand, the money would have created more jobs within the state. Hopefully, we will get it right someday.”
