Former President Muhammadu Buhari praises Tinubu’s performance despite economic downturn
Despite the biting economic situation in Nigeria, former President Muhammadu Buhari says he is happy with the performance of his successor, President Bola Tinubu.
“I am very pleased that they are able to stabilise the situation and continue to really get concerned about Nigerians,” Mr Buhari said. “I am very happy about their performance.”
The former president was quoted to have said this in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson for Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Mr Buhari in Duara, Katsina, on Friday.
President Buhari’s commendation of the ongoing government’s efforts emerges against a backdrop of sustained protests across Nigeria, with citizens voicing grievances over the soaring cost of living and escalating food prices.
Recall that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) recently declared a two-day nationwide mass protest for February 27 and 28.
The NLC said in a statement that “it is regrettable that we are compelled to resort to such measures, but the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers and the massive hardship leave us with no choice.”
Nigeria is currently facing its worst inflation crisis, with the current rate getting closer to 30%.
Prices of food, fuel, transportation, and telecommunication increased to new record levels following the removal of fuel subsidies.
This rising inflation has taken a heavy toll on the socio-economic activities of the nation, despite the proposed transformations by the new president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
