In the wake of escalating economic challenges gripping Nigeria, residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) took matters into their own hands, resorting to looting a warehouse owned by the National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria (NEMA).

Reports reveal that the warehouse, situated in the Karimo area of Phase 3 in Abuja, fell victim to a looting frenzy on Sunday morning.

The residents seized the opportunity of the economic downturn to raid the NEMA warehouse, absconding with essential food items and other commodities.

The incident underscores the growing desperation among Nigerians grappling with the harsh realities of inflation and dwindling purchasing power.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force have been deployed to the area to disperse the looters and secure the building.

The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident saying that the situation had been brought under control.

“The situation is now under control,” she said.

This is not the first time that warehouses of strategic importance will be coming under attack.

Reports of similar looting at various warehouses in Lagos, Kaduna, Jos, Edo, and other parts of the country, all of which contained food items meant to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 lockdow regime on the less privileged in those areas.

Food supplies provided by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, including rice, spaghetti, instant noodles, garri, and other products, were found in large quantities, with the people running away what they claimed to be theirs in the first place.
