EFCC interrogates former Kwara State governor over multi-billion naira scandal
A former governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, is currently on the hot seat with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over controversial transactions running into billions of naira while he was serving as governor of the state.
The embattled former governor was seen arriving at the Ilorin office of the EFCC on Monday morning to answer questions from the anti-graft agency.
Abdulfatah Ahmed is not new to the EFCC. In May 2021, he underwent questioning by a specialized team of operatives at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja’s Jabi area, the capital city of Nigeria.
This interrogation was conducted regarding allegations of diverting funds totalling approximately N9 billion from the treasury of the Kwara State Government.
Reports say the huge sum of money was diverted during Ahmed’s tenure as governor of the state, and when was serving as the Commissioner for Finance in the administration of former Governor Bukola Saraki.
Ahmed was appointed as the Commissioner for Finance in Kwara after Saraki assumed office as governor in 2003.
Ahmed left office in 2019 after serving two terms in office and was succeeded by the incumbent governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who emerged on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
