President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined other African leaders to sympathise with the people and government of Namibia following the death of President President Hage Geingob.

President Hage Geingob was confirmed dead while seeking medical care at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba announced Mr Geingob’s death in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“By his side was his wife and his dear children,” said Mbumba said.

The 82-year-old leader had been diagnosed with cancer and announced his diagnosis to the public last month.

In a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Nigerian president described the death of Mr Geingob as a painful loss. He labelled the late president as a “veteran in the struggle for democracy; proponent of good governance, and advocate of economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples.

The statement added, “The President notes that this tragedy comes at a time when Africa needs more visionary leaders who believe in the common destiny of the continent, and who can strengthen bonds across borders and spread the tendrils of cooperation across all fields of human endeavour.

“As Namibia mourns, President Tinubu assures the Republic that his thoughts and prayers, and indeed those of Nigerians, are with them.”

The late president is currently serving his second and final term in office following his emergence as the leader of the country in 2015.

Namibia is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November.
