Association of women local bread bakers known as Gurasa in Kano, northern Nigeria, have protested against the rising cost of flour, as they appealed to President Bola Tinubu to come to act urgently on the current economic blues.

The angry women bakers took to the street with various inscriptions written on cardboard such as, “Government must do something urgently on the hyper rise of cost of flour’, ”We need government intervention, save our lives.”

Fatima Auwal Chediyar Yangurasa, the Chairperson of the Women Gurasa Producers, explained that they are rallying against the price of flour which has gone from about 16,000 naira per 50kg bag of flour to 43,000 in less than a month.

She said, “Life has gradually become difficult for us with many of our members being imprisoned because of debts and their children left to wallow in destitution and abject poverty”.

She said, “BUA Floor was the one we largely depend on and it is no longer available in the market because of its high price, most of our members use the BUA products because it yields enough Gurasa for sales”.

Prices of food, fuel, transportation and telecommunication increased to new record levels as Nigeria’s inflation rate passed 28 per cent in recent times.

This rising inflation has taken a heavy toll on the socio-economic activities of the nation despite the ongoing transformation by the new president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
