Gaza: African Union commends ICJ ruling against Israel
The African Union has welcomed the ruling of the International Court of Justice against Israel to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said in a statement on Saturday that “the urgent provisional measures ordered by the ICJ in the application brought by South Africa” are commendable.
He said the verdict maintains international law and Israel’s commitment to comply with the Genocide Convention.
South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Criminal Court (ICJ) in The Hague on December 29 on allegations of genocide against Palestinians, which was heard earlier this month.
On Friday, the World Court ruled South Africa’s argument that Israel is committing genocide plausible.
The court granted an interim ruling directing Israel to stop holding up aid delivery to Gaza and ameliorate the humanitarian situation.
At least 26,257 people have been killed and 64,797 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.
