In a recent situational report on the ongoing crisis in Sudan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reveals that South Sudan has become a sanctuary for over half a million people escaping the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.

Since the eruption of hostilities on April 15, 2023, a staggering 516,658 individuals have crossed the border into South Sudan.

According to Ocha’s findings, approximately 81% of these arrivals are South Sudanese nationals, while 18% constitute Sudanese refugees seeking refuge. This influx has prompted a substantial increase in the number of Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers entering South Sudan, marking a concerning trend.

The agency highlighted the growing challenges local authorities and humanitarian partners face due to the escalating numbers of refugees arriving through the border town of Renk. The surge in arrivals strains resources and poses significant security challenges in the region.

As South Sudan grapples with the humanitarian implications of this influx, the international community closely monitors the situation, urging collaborative efforts to address the pressing needs of those seeking shelter and safety.
