Supreme Court rules in favour of Gov Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto, rejects Umar’s appeal
The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Ahmed Aliyu as Sokoto State governor.
Delivering judgment, Justice Tijani Abubakar dismissed the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate, Saidu Umar.
Umar and the PDP had approached the Supreme Court to overturn the concurrent judgements of the Court of Appeal and the Tribunal.
He said that Aliyu’s election should be revoked due to electoral misconduct and violations of the Electoral Act.
He requested that the election be ruled invalid and that a new round of voting be held at roughly 138 polling places. Alternatively, he urged the court to declare him the legitimate victor of the election.
Last year, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC’s Aliyu the winner of the March 18 governorship election.
With 453,661 votes, Aliyu defeated Umar, his nearest opponent, who received 404,632 votes.
The latest ruling has ended the legal political contests in the last gubernatorial election in the state.
