Lagos Red Line rail will be unveiled in February, says Sanwo-Olu
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced that the Lagos Red Line rail will be ready for official commissioning by February 2024.
Sanwo-Olu stated this at the Lagos West Senatorial District Town Hall Meeting held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton, Ikeja.
The Lagos state governor also told the gathering that he had written officially to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the unveiling of the new rail line.
Recall that Sanwo-Olu unveiled the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Red Line Ikeja Overpass in December 2023.
“Our Red Line rail will be unveiled in February. In fact, we have written officially to Mr President to come and help us unveil it in February this year,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Red Line rail, according to Sanwo-Olu, will convey about 500,000 passengers daily when fully working.
The Lagos State Government has been working to create alternatives to road transportation as part of moves to ease movement in and around the state.
Lagos Blue Rail Train was flagged off last year and has commenced operations.
The Blue Line Rail Mass Transit was first conceived in 1983 during the regime of the former Governor of Lagos State, the Late Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
The rail network was flagged off 20 years while current Nigerian president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the governor of the state in 2003.
The first phase extends from Marina to Mile 2 and is 13 kilometres.
The 27km rail line will transport about 500,000 passengers daily.
The first phase has five stations — Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba and Orile station.
