Sudan rejects ‘unjust’ EU sanctions on economic institutions, says move may derail peace efforts

Sudan’s Foreign Ministry strongly criticized the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Sudanese economic institutions, denouncing them as “unjust” and asserting that such measures will hinder the pursuit of peace.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the ministry emphasized that the sanctions specifically targeting the national institutions of Sudan are counterproductive to achieving peace in the region.

It went on to rebuke the justification provided for targeting three economic institutions affiliated with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), describing it as “surprising and deplorable.”

The ministry further stated that the right and duty to defend the country necessitate the SAF seeking sufficiency in defensive equipment, adding that all laws guarantee the right to self-defense.

The European Council had on Monday announced sanctions against six entities associated with the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The sanctions include asset freezes and the prohibition of the provision of funds or economic resources, directly or indirectly.

The Council stated in a released statement that these entities were responsible for supporting activities that undermined the stability and political transition of Sudan.
