Pay-tv giant Supersport sets to air AFCON after initial failure to secure right  to broadcast

Multichoice, a South African company that operates DStv, a major satellite television service in Sub-Saharan Africa, and GOtv, has announced that its SuperSport channels on DSTV and GOtv will now air all 52 matches of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

The company confirmed this on its X account, formerly Twitter.

It simply read: “No gree for anybody! Watch all 52 matches of the #afcon2023 on
@supersports.”

SuperSport and the Nigerian Television Authority, will air the tournament live from Cote d’Ivoire.

Recall that Multichoice had initially said DSTV would not broadcast the AFCON because it could not secure the needed paperwork to beam the competition live.

The statement said,” SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.

“However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.”

With the U-turn, the pay-tv network in Africa would hope to have more viewers on its platform for the competition and beyond.

The delayed AFCON tournament will take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024 in the Ivorian cities of Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro and Yamoussoukro.
