Certificates Racketeering: Nigerian students body calls for leniency, says over 15,000 members affected
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Benin Republic, has called for leniency following a recent ban on university certificates from the country.
The apex Nigerian students’ body said over 15,000 students in the country have been affected by the ban.
Recall that the Nigerian government slapped a ban on universities in the Republic of Benin and Togo after an investigative reporter exposed certificate racketeering in schools in the neighbouring countries.
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, the NANS President of the Benin Republic, Ugochukwu Favour, called on the Federal Government not to throw a baby away with the bath water.
“For now, I will say that the Federal Government should look into the issue. Now, you can’t, because it is happening in this school, punish everyone because it involved close to 15,000 students in the Benin Republic.
“I have really not validated if it has been happening for a long time. This is just like what just came out on social media and we are still trying to find out how long it has been happening,” the NANS president said. “So, that is why I set up a committee as the president to investigate it.”
