Arsenal returned to winning ways as they thrashed a stubborn Brighton to move back to the top of the Premier League.
The north London club temporarily returned to the number spot thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ header and Kai Havertz’s late strike as Liverpool host Manchester United
A win for the Reds over struggling Manchester United would dislodge the Gunners from the summit of the log.
The stubborn visitors gave their hosts a big run for their money before their hopes of getting a win were dashed by the resilient home team.
Arsenal had 25 shots in the match and almost added a late third through Emile Smith Rowe who came in from the bench.
“It was an incredible performance. It was a joy to watch from the start to the end,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
“The way we played against a phenomenal Brighton side was incredible. We were patient, kept going, kept believing and got what we deserved.”
On his part, Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi said they had little opportunities to prepare for the game. He however admitted that the team deserves to lose.
I’m disappointed for the result but not for the other things. We deserved to lose. Arsenal played much better than us, they deserved to win the game,” said De Zerbi.
