Erik ten Hag ‘s replacement confirmed as Manchester United’s poor form continues
Manchester United are reportedly linked with Julen Lopetegui to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford if the Dutchman is eventually fired due to the club’s poor run of form.
Ten Hag’s position at the club came under serious doubt following Tuesday night’s 1-0 loss against Bayern Munich, leading to their exit from the apex inter-club competition in the world.
The club finished bottom of Group A on their return to the Champions League with just one win.
Before the disappointing outing on Tuesday, Bournemouth thrashed the former league winner as they secured their first-ever win at Old Trafford last weekend.
United will face Liverpool on Sunday in a trip to Anfield, which could prove to be a significant ramification for Ten Hag’s future at the club.
It comes despite Ten Hag recently being named Premier League Manager of the Month after leading United to three consecutive victories without conceding in November.
Daily Mail Sports quoted reports from the Spanish publication Relevo, that the club are already eyeing a replacement should the hammer fall in the coming days.
Former Spain boss Lopetegui is said to be ‘highly-rated’ by United and is ‘well positioned’ to become the club’s sixth permanent boss following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement after 27 years in charge just over a decade ago.
According to the report, Lopetegui turned down a £15.5 million-a-year offer to become the latest high-profile coach to take charge of a club in the Saudi Pro League, citing his desire to return to the Premier League.
Lopetegui left Wolves in August after nine months in command, signing a seven-figure severance agreement to leave just three days before the beginning of the Premier League season after ties with the club’s owners worsened over transfer policy.
