In a compelling visit to a shelter in Brampton, Canada, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), delivered a poignant message to Nigerians contemplating migration, emphasizing the imperative of pursuing legal avenues with proper documentation to avert adverse consequences.

Expressing sympathy for the predicament of Nigerians residing in the shelter, Dabiri-Erewa cautioned against the perilous path of seeking asylum without proper documentation.

She underscored the escalating challenges faced by migrants in various countries, asserting that the endeavor is often “just not worth it.”

During the visit, Pastor Vivian Eruka, associated with the Bethel food bank and shelter, revealed a promising commitment from the Mayor of Brampton to provide an additional 800 beds for those seeking refuge.

In a heartening display of solidarity, Mr. Wale Rabiu, owner of Matlock bakery, contributed to the cause by generously donating hundreds of loaves of Agege bread to the shelter residents.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bayo Adedosu, a Nigerian living in Canada and an immigration consultant, offered valuable counsel, urging migrants not to disparage their homeland, Nigeria, to avoid potential repercussions. Adedosu also implored them to exercise patience and adhere to the laws of their host country.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of the Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit at NIDCOM, echoed the sentiment that while migration is a human rights issue, it must be pursued through legitimate channels, steering clear of irregular paths.

In a collective effort to address the challenges faced by migrants, this visit encapsulates a call for responsible migration and a reminder of the importance of upholding the rule of law in the pursuit of a better life abroad.
