Advocacy group urges government intervention to secure future amidst rising number of out-of-school children
The Advocacy for Positive Behavioural Patterns Initiative has emphasizlsed the pivotal role the youth play in shaping the future of any nation, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention in addressing the alarming rise in out-of-school children across Nigeria.
Mr Ayo Olutekunbi, the Executive Director of the initiative, voiced his concerns about the substantial challenge Nigeria faces, with a significant number of children out of the formal education system.
He stressed that neglecting their education could potentially lead to these youngsters becoming a societal burden, putting Nigeria’s global standing at risk.
Olutekunbi highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and abundant human resources, asserting that the nation should be on a trajectory for global greatness. However, the staggering number of out-of-school children poses a significant threat to realizing this potential.
“These children, devoid of formal education, are often left to fend for themselves, depriving them of opportunities to develop essential life skills and knowledge,” Olutekunbi expressed, attributing the root causes to economic constraints, cultural norms, and security challenges in certain regions.
The consequences of this educational crisis extend beyond the individuals involved, as Olutekunbi warned of potential engagement in harmful activities, such as criminal behavior, social unrest, and the perpetuation of a cycle of poverty from one generation to the next.
To address this critical issue, Olutekunbi urged the government to increase budget allocations for education, with a specific focus on providing scholarships, grants, and financial aid to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
He emphasized that such financial support is crucial in removing economic barriers to education and securing a brighter future for the nation.
The Advocacy for Positive Behavioural Patterns Initiative is steadfast in its call for immediate action, urging the government to prioritize the education of the youth to safeguard the nation’s future prosperity and global reputation.
