Gov Abiodun gives reasons for razing Gbenga Daniel’s wife DATKEM Plaza in Ijebu Ode
Ogun State Government has revealed the causes of the demolition order of a multistorey building named DATKEM Plaza belonging to the wife of former governor Gbenga Daniel, Mrs Olufunke Daniel.
This was contained in an official release on Sunday, September 10, 2023, from the office of the executive governor, Mr Dapo Abiodun.
According to the statement, Mr Abiodun-led administration is proactive about any activities deemed to endanger the safety and protection of Ogun citizens. He stated that it was an illegal structure that contravened Ogun Physical Planning Laws.
The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development stated that the initial plan approved for the building was for 4 storeys (5 floors) with airspace of 3 meters at the right, 5 meters at the left, 5 meters at the rear and a setback of 32.5516 meters to the middle of Ijebu Ode/Ibadan road, Ijebu-Ode.
However, the construction took on completely different dimensions, with additional storeys and expansion in length and width to the extent of leaving no adequate parking space for workers and staff.
The statement read, ” …the building had been modified and enlarged with an additional storey building at the back thereby becoming over density.
“For a commercial building of that status, there must be parking space to accommodate vehicular traffic within and outside the facility for workers and visitors. The provision of the law is for 45 to 50 percent of available land for construction as a buildable area,” the town planning office noted.
Speaking on the precious lives of Nigerians that have been taken as a result of sudden fall of defective buildings, Governor Abiodun noted the fire outbreak disaster at Ikorodu, which was consequential to a breach in proposed building structure plans.
He maintained that the hiring contractor for the project also failed to present stage approval certification upon request by the government, turning deaf ears to ‘stop work’ orders.
