On his part, China’s President Xi Jinping said, “This membership expansion is historic.”

“It shows the determination of BRICS countries for unity and cooperation with the broader developing countries.”

Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday said the BRICS countries support the inclusion of the African Union in the Group of 20 nations.

He said this during a news conference in Johannesburg.

The Brazilian leader has in recent times shown his affection for the continent.

In May, the Brazilian leader met with the president of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, at the expanded G7 summit and highlighted Brazil’s historical ties with Africa.
