Roberto Mancini resigns as Italy head coach

The Italian football national coach, Roberto Mancini, has resigned as head of the technical team of the Azzurri, the country’s football federation (FIGC) said on Sunday.

“A significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and ended with the 2023 Nations League Finals, comes to an end,” the FIGC said in a statement.

“Taking into account the important and close commitments for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers… the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days,” a statement read.

Mancini takes over as manager of the team in 2018 after they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

He led Italy to victory at the 2021 European Championship, but the squad failed to qualify for last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Mancini has faced significant pressure in the Italian media to resign his role as head coach following last year’s dismal World Cup qualifying campaign. He, however, earned backing from the country’s federation president to stay in the post.
